Choose the kind of quilting first
Ask the provider to confirm the design you want: an all-over edge-to-edge pattern, custom work arranged around the quilt, or time on a rental machine you operate yourself. A shop can offer one without offering the others. Look at the specific service page and ask to see examples of that kind of work.
Read the backing rule before buying fabric
Keep the provider’s wording beside your measurements. “Eight inches larger in width and length” adds eight inches to each whole dimension. “Four inches on every side” gives the same total excess. A phrase such as “four inches bigger” leaves the direction unclear; get clarification before cutting.
For a 60 × 80-inch quilt top, a requirement for eight extra inches in each dimension means a backing target of 68 × 88 inches. This is a dimensional example, not a universal preparation rule. Use the backing calculator with the rule for your chosen provider.
Bring the whole quote into view
For a price per square inch, multiply quilt-top width by length by the stated rate. A published minimum may then apply. Ask separately about batting, thread, backing seams, preparation, trimming, binding, tax and shipping. Confirm whether a deposit is part of the total.
Our profiles display a numeric rate only where its currency and unit are clear. Differing rates or ambiguous units stay flagged for confirmation.
Confirm the handoff and return
- Ask when the turnaround estimate starts: booking, drop-off or the assigned quilting date.
- Check whether mail-in quilts are accepted and how return postage and insurance are handled.
- Read the batting policy and ask about your particular material before purchasing it.
- For rental, confirm training, certification, machine width and whether you must maintain certification through regular use.
