THE QUILTING REFERENCE / PRACTICAL GUIDES

Find a quilting class you can be ready for

Check prerequisites, equipment, materials and the class format before booking.

Match the class to a skill you want to learn

Start with the project or technique, then read the prerequisites. “Beginner” can refer to quilting experience while still assuming that you can thread and operate a sewing machine. Ask what you should already know and which steps the teacher will demonstrate.

Check what you need to bring

MachineIs one supplied? If you bring your own, which feet and accessories are required?
MaterialsIs the pattern included? Do you need a kit, pre-cut fabric, thread or batting?
PreparationShould you wash, press or cut anything before class? Follow the specific class instructions.
TimeWhat are the exact dates, session length and time zone for online instruction?

Separate a course from a seat

A shop advertising classes does not establish an available place in a particular session. Follow its current registration page. For recorded instruction, check access duration and whether questions or feedback are included. For a live course, read the cancellation and rescheduling terms before booking.

Rental certification is its own course

A longarm rental class may teach you to operate the shop’s equipment and require certification before independent booking. Read the shop’s requirements for practice materials and continued certification. Do not assume a general quilting class covers machine rental.
