Check certification before choosing a date
Ask which course qualifies you to use the shop’s machine, what the course costs and what you must bring. Confirm whether certification expires after a period without a rental. A quilting class and a rental certification course can cover different skills.
Price the time you will actually book
Read the hourly rate together with any minimum booking. Ask whether loading, setup and cleanup use paid machine time, and whether the reservation fee is included in the total. Confirm cancellation and rescheduling terms before booking.
Keep the first visit separate from later rentals
Write down the certification fee, the rental charge and any supplies as separate amounts. A two-hour minimum is a billing rule; it does not establish that your quilt will take two hours. Ask the shop to help estimate the time for your quilt size, design and experience.
Prepare for that shop’s equipment
- Get the backing and batting dimensions before cutting. Keep the exact rule for each side or whole dimension.
- Confirm whether thread is supplied and which batting you may bring.
- Ask whether you load the quilt yourself and which tasks must be finished before arriving.
- Check how the shop handles a booking that needs more time than reserved.
The source-linked examples below show the terms each business has published. Missing details remain questions to ask. Use the backing calculator only after you have the chosen shop’s dimensional rule.
